Project Impact
Description
This club worked with the Rotary Club of Barbados South, the Interact Club of Queen’s College, the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Smart Technology and the National Cultural Foundation. So this is a good example of why and how to seek out partners and supporters when planning your projects. These young people realized that during the pandemic, children ages 6-11 were really being challenged educationally and were also missing out on their usual reading clubs. So they set up a virtual Rotaract Reading Room for the children, to foster a love of reading and the acquisition of new knowledge. The club showcased books that were written by local and regional authors, they collected books through book drives that were donated to school libraries, while supporting rewarding volunteer opportunities for club members and community volunteers. They taught literacy skills in the context of developmentally and culturally appropriate texts while also tackling topics of healthy lifestyles and bullying. They did this through presentations by club members and the literature chosen as well as through accompanying activities.
